Challenges & Applications

EARLY SETTING for early covering

Whenever screed is laid, the question is asked: ‘When it will be set and ready for the next layer?’ According to German standard DIN 18560, this occurs when the residual concrete moisture (CM) falls below 2%, or below 1.8% in the case of heated screeds. With normal screeds and poor environmental conditions, this can actually take a number of weeks or even months. But time is money! With our screed systems, you can achieve early setting and covering. How? Screed dries thanks to two phenomena. One is hydration, during which water is chemically bound by the reaction with cement. The other involves the evaporation of excess water added in order to achieve the necessary application consistency. MC’s Powerscreed actively accelerates hydration while at the same time reducing the volume of surplus water. This means that the water-cement ratio is also positively influenced, leading to increased early and final strength values.

MINIMISING ENVIRONMENTAL REMOISTENING

Moisture exchange with the screed often occurs due to the presence of damp walls and floors, high air humidity levels, changes in the dew point, ongoing plastering and painting or a lack of damp-proof course to prevent rising damp. Dried screeds can undergo remoistening as a result, and this means that the required residual moisture level is not reached until later on – if at all. With the remoistening protection agent Easyscreed RS, these problems can be effectively avoided. As well as minimising remoistening, this liquid additive also improves screed workability. It is easy to dispense and can be used alone as a processing aid or in combination with other screed admixtures and additives from MC. Untreated screeds too are rendered easier to work with the addition of Easyscreed RS, while simultaneously benefiting from the additional remoistening protection that it affords.

RAPID, RIGID CRACK REPAIR

Even expertly laid screeds will occasionally develop cracks near the surface, occasionally running right through the cross section. If these flaws are not repaired, they may lead to significant damage later on. MC-Bauchemie offers a wide range of product systems that rigidly and permanently repair cracks in screeds. With the two-component reaction resin MC-Estrifan RIS-SL, both cracks and joints can be quickly, cleanly and reliably filled. Application is effortless: the base and hardening components are simply mixed in the bottle and then poured into the cracks or joints.
